Happy Birthday Home Skillet

Today is Heather's 31st birthday. Happy Birthday Heather!

For a while I was at quite a loss as to what to get Heather for her birthday. So I put on the ole thinking cap and considered the problem at length. What would make Heather happy? What brings her joy? What does she like best, better than sex, beer or a Trot Nixon homerun?

Why Madonna of course.

It's no secret among our circle of friends that Heather is Madonna's number one fan. Heather's admiration for the Material Girl knows no bounds, and a song from The Immaculate Collection is sure to bring a smile to her face. So I compiled a unique birthday CD of Madonna material for my home skillet and war-time consigliore. I call it... Like A Birthday.

Now some of you may be scratching your head and saying 'Dan, what's so great about burning a CD full of songs she already owns and listens to on a daily basis?' Well I'll tell you. It's not just Madonna singing... it's me and Madonna!

Yes, like Natalie Cole, the wonders of technology have allowed me to create an album of duets with someone I have no way of actually singing with! Oh the bliss Heather will feel as she listens, awestruck, to the sublime combination of vocals that is The Silver Fox and Madonna singing Lucky Star. She won't be able to keep from dancing! And oh how moved Heather will be at our touching voices drawing out the sadness of the world through Live To Tell. I can barely contain myself when I think of our tender version of Crazy For You. No doubt CS will hold her gently as they slow dance around their living room, as The Silver Fox and Madonna bring the romance.

I have even included a hidden bonus track! Yes, my thoughtfulness and creativity have no limits. I found a rare extended dance mix of La Isla Bonita - in itself a triumph that will gain me Heather's eternal gratitude - and then I added a little something strait from the musical cookbook of the Silver Fox. After hours of mixing and splicing, cutting and dicing, Heather's version of La Isla Bonita now also contains a rap interlude! In Spanish! What better way to honor their honeymoon in Spain than to kick it Rico Suave style on her birthday?

But wait! There's more! Yes, that's right, there's a second bonus hidden track! You see, if there's anything Heather likes as much as Madonna, it's musicals. I can't count the time she's asked - indeed pleaded - for me to sing some show tunes down at the local. Especially her favorite show tune... Tomorrow from the smash broadway hit Annie. And let me tell you readers, I've recorded the version to end all versions of Tomorrow; I even enlisted a guest artist - The Bunny. My soaring vocals squeeze every drop of hope from the delightfully optimistic lyrics, while Bunny's efforts on the tambourine, triangle and glockenspiel add a certain je ne sais quoi. Our sound engineer wept at the potent music magic we created. I can close my eyes and hear the music even now:
The sun will come out,
Tomorrow.
Bet your bottom dollar that
tomorrow,
There'll be sun!

Just thinkin' about,
Tomorrow.
Clears away the cobwebs,
and the sorrow
'til there's none!

When I'm stuck a day,
that's gray,
and lonely.
I just stick out my chin,
and grin,
and say,
Oh!

The sun'll come out,
Tomorrow.
So ya gotta hang on
'til tomorrow,
Come what may!
Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
I love ya! Tomorrow!
You're always
a day
away

This is going to be Heather's best birthday ever.
