The World Turned Upside Down
August 1st, 2004. Nomar Garciaparra - our Nomah - started today for another major league ballclub.
The facts are this: Nomar went to the Cubs. In return we recieved a light-hitting infield duo of Cabrera and Doug Mintyfresh. No Clement, as Sox fans had originally hoped. The Sox also despatched our top minor league positional prospect (Merton) and some cash.
The speculation is: Nomar was not going to re-sign with Sox, so they had to trade him for something. Nomar was a clubhouse cancer. Nomar's nagging injury was going to limit his playing time down the stretch. Nomar was dogging it, using his nagging injury to force a trade to another team. Nomar hated it here and resented management's attempt to trade him during the off season. John Henry wanted Nomar gone and forced Theo to deal him in this lop-sided trade. All unprovable, except for second-guessing and rumor-mongering.
The reality is: it's damn strange to think of a Nomah!-less Red Sox. And sad. To many Boston fans, and the rest of the world, Nomar was the outward face of the Red Sox. Even Yankee fans are expressing shock at this departure, respect for his accomplishments, and relief that their team won't face Nomar again unless the Cubs meet the Yankees in the post season.
Oh yeah - the Sox lost last night and tonight. Today their 'AAAA' line-up wasted a sterling effort by Pedro. Cabrera - touted by Theo as improvement in defence - booted a crucial ball and made a huge error.
